The Second Meeting of UNESCO Category 2 Centers in Iran Hosted by the International Center for Qanats and Historic Hydraulic Structures in Yazd

The second meeting of UNESCO Category 2 Centers in Iran was held on December 15, 2024, hosted by the International Center on Qanats and Historic Hydraulic Structures (ICQHS) in Yazd. This gathering brought together directors and experts from UNESCO Category 2 Centers in Iran, along with representatives from the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO and the UNESCO Office in Tehran.

The Second Meeting of UNESCO Category 2 Centers in Iran was held on December 15, 2024, hosted by the International Center on Qanats and Historic Hydraulic Structures (ICQHS) in Yazd. This gathering took place from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, with the participation of directors and experts from Category 2 Centers in Iran, representatives of other related centers, and the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO.

At the outset, Mr. Mehdi Javadianzadeh, Director of ICQHS, welcomed the participants and highlighted the importance of this meeting in enhancing interaction and collaboration among UNESCO Category 2 Centers. Following his address, Mr. Ieng Srong, Head of the UNESCO Office in Tehran, delivered a speech introducing UNESCO's objectives in supporting specialized centers.

Next, Mr. Hassan Fartousi, Secretary-General of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO, emphasized the significant role of Category 2 Centers within UNESCO’s global network. A keynote speech was then delivered by Mr. Sediq Mostahkam, a senior official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, stressing the importance of international cooperation in strengthening the performance of these centers.

After the opening speeches, participants gathered for a group photo, and the second part of the program continued with brief technical presentations by the directors of the Category 2 Centers. This segment, moderated by Ms. Mehrasa Mehrdadi from the UNESCO Office in Tehran, provided an opportunity for the directors to present updates on their ongoing activities and future plans.

During this section, representatives from various centers delivered their presentations, including Ms. Atusa Momeni (Regional Research Center for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage), Ms. Mojgan Yazdianpour (Regional Center for Science Parks and Technology Incubator5 Development), Mr. Hamid Aghaei (International Center on Health- Related Basic Sciences and Human Nutrition), Mr. Amini Hosseini (Regional Education and Research Center on Earthquake Risk Management and Resilience), Mr. Mohammad Hajrasouliha (Regional Center for Urban Water Management), Mr. Hamid Nouri (International Center for Integrated Watershed Management in Arid and Semi-Arid Regions), Mr. Morteza Tavakoli (Regional Educational and Research Center for Oceanography for Western Asia), and Mr. Mehdi Javadianzadeh (ICQHS).

Following these presentations, panel discussions were held. The first panel focused on strengthening international cooperation, while the second addressed enhancing internal collaboration among the centers.

The meeting concluded with a closing session. During this session, representatives of the technical panels presented their reports, followed by speeches from representatives of the UNESCO Office in Tehran, the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. These concluding remarks emphasized future steps and action plans.

Key topics addressed during the meeting included challenges such as issues with funding and international communication, the need to review activities and identify weaknesses, strengthening the capacities of the centers at the national level, expanding their activities internationally, and aligning their operations with international standards.

This meeting provided a valuable opportunity for sharing achievements, fostering collaborations, and creating a dynamic platform for joint strategy development.
